Here is my review of the book. Hope you’ll enjoy the book. I did ^^
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
People, this book is….quite magical.
Writing is good. Story is good. There was more mystery than I expected. Only the plot is too confusing for my taste. So many things happen one after another and at some point I felt frustrated because writer played with the truth too much. You may feel like it is unnecessarily long.
Main character, Scarlet is really likeable, it’s just there were some moments I couldn’t really understand her…
I love and appreciate the bond between siblings. Scarlet started this whole journey for her sister’s sake. Fine. She was worried to death the whole time, because her reckless sister was lost in a dangerously beautiful place which has been the main theme of Scarlet’s dreams ever since she was little. Yet every single time she was distracted from looking for her sister or did something for herself her next thought was, “No, Tella.., Donatella…, Her sister.., She should have been thinking only of Tella…”
Now, that felt forced on the character. However worried she might have been these thoughts weren’t sincere for me. She was like “Oh look, how worried I am…”
Come on, Scar. -_-
I would understand that you are still worried, no need to make it that dramatic.
“Fate meant that nothing she did matter.”
Scarlet being overly dramatic again.Sometimes it made me feel like she is just an overly emotional Victorian character. Go grab a dictionary Scarlet. You are not totally powerless against your fate. You do what you need to do, what you can do, and then pray to Heavens it will be fine. If it still happens -whatever it is- then yes, this is fate and it was meant to happen.
Luckily, this girl got her act together and learnt to take control. All because of her lovely Julian.
I make no comments on how little she thought of her sister when he is around her because that is also not natural for an overly concerned big sister. After all, her companion Julian and sister Tella have history.
“…The fire in the hearth finally died, sending a gray coil of smoke into the air, the color of things better said in whispers…”
“Brownish green, the color of forgotten memories, abandoned dreams and bitter gossip.”
“..sting of her rejection in shades of stormy blue…”
For Scarlet there is a meaning for every color. This girl still thinks in a fancy way despite her twisted father, right?
And after all the fuss about searching for the lost sister, she happents to be Legend’s second in command for this year’s Caraval and we don’t even see who is Legend, just a player plays his part…
I felt like… ,
Wait, I didn’t feel like anything because like I said, so many things happened till this point that even if Scarlet herself planned all this I wouldn’t be surprised.
Confusion confusion everywhere..
Still, it is 4 stars for me.
Because against all the confusion there is one single clear message, “There is more to life than being safe.” and there is magic of course.
The writer just put together all the small details I like…
gentlemens with top-hats,
sisterly love (though exaggerated^^)
and of course that carousel made of red rose petals…
“Thorns protected roses.”
